- Found in a file written by Ralph Edward Main: (BEGIN QUOTE) Ralph worked at two different manufacturing companies in his life time. The first was the Keystone Driller Works in Beaver Falls. They made well drilling and steam shovels. They worked twelve hours a day with an hour off for lunch. While there he came up with the idea of a vacuum windshield wiper. At that time they were hand operated with a crank which was hard to operate while driving. On his lunch hour he built one that would operate on the vacuum from the engine. It was about four inches by three inches. Then he put it on his automobile. There was another fellow that watched my Dad build it each day. After it was completed and operating this fellow left the Driller Works and before long the vacuum windshield wiper was on the market. Every automobile made had one on it from the factory. Then he went to the Ingram-Richardson Enameling Mfg. Co. as a millright boss as they were called at that time. He came up with many ideas to automate the operation. He built the first continuous running electric furnace for firing the ware. He built the first continuous running drier for drying the ware before it was fired. He built all kind of conveyor systems to move the ware to each operation. They made all the gasoline enameled signs. They made refrigerator inside boxes. They started with the steel sheets and came out with the finished products. They made many things. They even made an enamel house. I used to take his lunch to him and they let me walk through the plant. That was interesting. They used to call him "Beanie Main" for some unknown reason.
My Dad had an automobile most of the time, which was expensive to operate because gasoline was twelve cents a gallon. He always hauled fellows to work from the neighborhood. Once in a great while they would buy him some gas. When I was about seven or eight I would get up at five in the morning and take hot water to the garage and put it in the radiator. In the winter the ones that couldn't afford alcohol would drain the radiators every night. Sometimes the water would freeze as soon as I put it in. I would set the spark and throttle and then crank it. Sometimes it would kick back but I got good enough at my settings that I didn't get a broken arm or chin.
My Dad was a great man. He did like his chew tobacco. [Mail Pouch] A stogie was a treat and everyone liked the smell of the smoke. He also had a stinkey pipe.
Now for my mother Ruth Craven Main. She raised six boys and could do anything with her hands. She could make clothes, flowers out of anything and many other crafts. She had a hard time during the depression feeding all of us. If the beans burned you ate them anyway. She baked bread, rolls and many other things. Used to wash in the winter and hang the cloths on lines in the kitchen over night to dry. We had a big coal stove in the dining room that I carried buckets of coal to the house every day after school. It heated the whole house some what. In the cold winters you couldn't look outside in the bedroom because the windows were iced up to the top. Things weren't as tough on the younger three growing up for one reason I sent all my money other than a dollar a month home from the service. I thought it was being saved for my education when and if I got back home but it helped raise the three younger ones. It went to good use I guess. My mother was a great mother.(END QUOTE).
