Thomas Johnston was born circa 1788 at Pennsylvania. He married Katherine Main, daughter of Philip Main and Clarianne 'Clory Ann' Rough, on 1 January 1824 at Pennsylvania. Thomas Johnston died in 1866 at Pike County, Illinois.
Thomas Johnston appeared on the census of 25 September 1850 at Household 45 (Page 6), North Sewickley, Beaver County, Pennsylvania; is age 50 or maybe 51, (should be 61), married to Katherine, and he is working as a laborer. Four children are with them. He appeared on the census of 26 August 1860 at Page 28; Household 202, Hardin Township, Pike County, Illinois; is age 72, married to Catherine, and he is not working. Joseph is still at home and is farming. A female M. McClain, age 8, is living with them.

  1. Since the name Thomas Johnston is so very common, it has been quite a task tracing this family. Another issue we have faced is the age and year of birth for Thomas. The census takers handwriting is never clear, and on Thomas, if his age in 1850 is 50, as it appears to be, then he is 22 years older in the 1860 census. One of these has to be incorrect. If the 1860 census is correct, then he would have been born early enough to have served in the War of 1812. If he was born around 1800, then he couldn't have served in the War of 1812, which is said to have occurred in "Portrait and Biographical Album of Pike County Illinois", published in 1891 .

William Henry Johnston was born in 1826 at Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Troutner, daughter of John Troutner Sr. and Elizabeth Heth, on 12 October 1854 at Pike County, Illinois; was found in book 1, page 206.
William Henry Johnston appeared on the census of 25 September 1850 at Page; Household 46, North Sewickley, Beaver County, Pennsylvania; is age 24, living with his parents and he is working as a boatman. He appeared on the census of 6 August 1860 at Dwelling 174; Page 24, Hardin Township, Pike County, Illinois; is age 33, married to 'E' and he is farming. Living with them is a male H. Johnston age 10, two Morton children, and 2 younger Johnston children. They live next to Daniel and Ruth Main. I feel the census taker made errors in the surname for some of the chlidren. In doing research, I find that Elizabeth and Mathew Morton had a son, Henry Morton, born the same time as the H. Johnston listed in this census. Since William and Elizabeth didn't marry until 1854, I feel the first female listed as a Morton, also to be Elizabeth and Mathew's child. However, the next female listed as a Morton, I feel is an error. I find her in the 1870 census with the surname Johnston. He appeared on the census of 27 August 1870 at Dwelling 118; Pages 17 & 18, Waverly Township, Lincoln County, Missouri; is age 43, married to Elizabeth, and he is farming. Seven children are with them. Elizabeth's son, Henry Morton, age 20, is also with them.

Joseph A. 'Joe' Johnston was born on 26 June 1836 at Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Main, daughter of Solomon Main and Susannah Nye, on 10 October 1861 at Pike County, Illinois. Joseph A. 'Joe' Johnston married Mrs. Frances Tyler on 6 April 1894 at Cleburne County, Arkansas; I have copy of marriage license. I have no proof that our Joseph married again after Susan died, but this J. A. Johnston is the correct age to be our Joseph. Joseph A. 'Joe' Johnston died in 1903 at Arkansas. He was buried in 1903 at Goodloe Cemetery, north of Quitman, Cleburne County, Arkansas; I have picture of grave marker. His name is Joseph E. on his marker.
Joseph A. 'Joe' Johnston appeared on the census of 19 August 1870 at Dwelling 265; Page 35 (182), Hartford, Pike County, Missouri; is age 22, (this is incorrect), married to Susan, and he is farming. Four children are with them. They live near Rachel and Philip Main. He appeared on the census of 22 June 1880 at S.D.3; E.D.138; Page 27, Hartford Township, Pike County, Missouri; is Joseph 'E.' age 43 married to Mary A.age 45. Seven children are with them. Is Mary our Susan? Since we have no reason to believe Susan died this early, and she is buried next to Joseph in Arkansas, I feel the name of the wife in this census must be in error. He appeared on the census of 13 June 1900 at S.D.2; E.D.11; Sheet 7 A, Cadron Township, Cleburne County, Arkansas; is age 63 and is widowed. His daughter, Annie, and two grandchildren, Cora G. and Harvey E. Johnson are living with him. These are the children of Louisa and her husband Allen Johnson.

  1. Joe and Susan have been very hard to trace. The 1850 census shows Joseph A., age 14, living with his parents. In the 1870 census Emmett is listed as Emma, a female. In the 1880 census we find Joseph E. married to Mary A. and now it is Emmett, a male, (no Emma) along with the other children of Joseph and Susan. We know that Emmett really is male and we have no reason to believe there was a female Emma. Why Joseph has the middle initial E. and Susan has become Mary A. I do not know. Even his grave marker has Joseph E. buried beside Susan.
