ASIATIC CHOLERA - While this scourge wrought great devastation in some sections of the United States in 1848-'9, Pike county almost escaped its ravages. In and about Pittsfield Dr. Comstock, DeWitt St. John, David Ober and wife, Mr. Main, Alvin Hash's wife and several strangers died, and at Kinderhook there were 15 or 20 cases of the disease. It seemed to have got out into the county from Louisiana, whither it had been brought by steamers from the lower Mississippi.

He appeared on the census of 14 August 1850 at Dwelling 86; Page 138, Pittsfield, Pike County, Illinois; is age 25, married to Anna and he is working as a stone mason. One child, William, age 7 months, is with them.

  1. I have no proof that the Mary Wiley buried very near Philip Main is actually Mary Susan Main. We have done extensive research and cannot disprove that this is her. With what we have found, we are led to believe there is a very strong chance that Mary Susan was indeed the wife of William Wiley. I would appreciate any help in proving or disproving my theory.

We have learned that a descendant of Mary Susan & William Wiley has had DNA testing. He is a 90% match with our Main family. He feels confident that our Mary Susan is the daughter of Philip, and the wife of William Wiley.
